My name is Andrew Dickey, and I’m a Mechanical Engineering student at Old Dominion University. My interest in engineering started at a young age—whether I was playing with Legos or stacking objects just to see how high I could go, I was always fascinated by how things are built. I knew I wanted to pursue engineering seriously during my sophomore year of high school, when I took a carpentry class. That class taught me how to safely use hand and power tools, as well as how to measure, cut, shape, and join wood for building and installation projects. From that moment on, I was hooked.

 

​I chose to attend ODU because of its strong engineering program and the opportunities it offers for hands-on learning. I wanted to be part of a university where I could grow both academically and personally while working toward my career goals. One of the key moments that confirmed my path was a carpentry class I took in high school. It taught me how to safely use tools and work with materials, which gave me a better understanding of how things are made. That hands-on experience inspired me to pursue engineering in college.

Outside of academics, I enjoy working with my hands and learning how things function. These experiences help shape how I communicate—I like to be clear, direct, and detail-oriented, especially when explaining complex ideas.
